Microwave-assisted sample preparation techniques are widely used in elemental analysis today. This lecture will provide a broad overview of these techniques and discuss them briefly considering the currently commercially available instruments. Thereby, open and closed vessel systems for batch digestion, flow digestion systems, microwave-induced combustion and microwave-assisted UV digestion will be introduced, setting the stage for a thorough discussion in further lectures given in the cause of the workshop.
