Since the 1970’s microwave-assisted sample preparation methods have become standard analytical tools. In analytical chemistry microwave radiation has been applied in many sample treatment operations from sample drying or fusions to acid digestion or combustion. This lecture will describe the basic fundamentals of microwave radiation, its interactions with materials, and some instrumental features for sample preparation.
